From the Prairies to the Pacific: Driving Winnipeg to Vancouver and Back

Winnipeg: It was just a phone call that fulfilled my long-pending wish of embarking on a Winnipeg to Vancouver road trip. It took me no time to say “yes” to my friend, Atinderpal Singh Virk, who proposed a cross-country road journey, traveling across four Canadian provinces – Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.

We planned our Western Canada travel itinerary in advance. From the Prairies to the Pacific, I discovered landscapes, hidden gems, and scenic views that made my long-awaited Canadian road trip unforgettable.

Winnipeg to Regina – Canadian Plains and Open Skies

We began our memorable trip on a Sunday morning from Winnipeg, with Regina as our first major stop. Crossing Manitoba into Saskatchewan by road offered an authentic glimpse of Canadian culture and prairie life.

We passed through charming small cities and towns such as Portage la Prairies, Carbery, Brandon, Oak Lake, and Virden in Manitoba; followed by Moosomin, Broadview, Grenfell, and Indian Head in Saskatchewan.

At Indian Head, we enjoyed Pranthe at a local Indian restaurant. Before continuing to Regina, we grabbed a coffee from Tim Hortons.

Regina is probably the least talked Canadian city and the capital of the province. The city is beautifully centred by Wascana Lake, offering vast green spaces that pleasantly impress visitors.

Regina to Medicine Hat – Long Roads and Quiet Towns

Next, we headed from Regina to Medicine Hat, a small city in Alberta situated near the Saskatchewan border. The drive took around 4.5 hours, with a quick stop in Swift Current. Moose Jaw is the nearest city from Regina on the way to Alberta.

From Medicine Hat, we traveled to Brooks, a peaceful town in Alberta where we stayed overnight. These small Canadian cities, though quiet, are filled with warmth and hospitality. These are worth visiting places if you want to experience true Canadian life.

Into Alberta- Calgary Vibes and the Foothills

Alberta, one of Canada’s most picturesque provinces, is known for its majestic Rocky Mountains, but its mesmerizing plains are equally charming.

From Winnipeg to Vancouver, our next destination after Brooks was Calgary. Though I had visited the city in 2023, this experience felt different and more memorable. Canada truly comes alive in the summer, and driving from Brooks to Calgary is a transition from flat prairies to gentle foothills.

While in Calgary, we visited downtown and the Calgary Tower, one of the city’s iconic landmarks. The large highways connecting the city to nearby towns reflect its growth and fast-paced life. The bright sun shining over greenery added to the city’s vibrant atmosphere – Calgary’s vibe was unmatched.

Banff – A Slice of Heaven in the Rockies

Banff was our most anticipated stop on our journey. I had wanted to visit this resort town two years ago, but could not make it then.

Nestled in the Canadian Rockies, Banff is a magical place that words can hardly do justice. It draws tourists from around the world throughout the year, thanks to its iconic hiking trails, waterfalls, lakes and its location within Banff National Park – a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The peaks of Mt. Rundle and Mt. Cascade dominate the skyline, offering postcard-perfect views. Though we skipped Lake Louise this time, it remains on our list for future visits.

The drive from Banff to British Columbia reaffirmed my believe that anyone can fall in love with Canada at first sight – Canada is simply beautiful beyond words.

Golden – The Charm of Small-Town British Columbia

While traveling Winnipeg to Vancouver, Golden was our first stop in Beautiful British Columbia after crossing the Alberta border. This town left us awestruck, surrounded by towering mountains and clouds.

Golden is nature lover’s paradise, offering activities year-around – hiking, biking, heli-hiking, and more. It is a percent family destination nestled near several national parks: Yoho, Glacier, Jasper, Kootenay, Banff, and Mount Revelstoke.

Kamloops – Between Mountains and Valleys

The four-hour drive from Golden to Kamloops was anything but dull. We experienced a transition from towering Canadian Rockies to the unique landscape of the Thompson Plateau.

During our road trip, we encountered dense forests, rolling hills and expansive grasslands as we approached Kamloops. Known for outdoor adventure, Kamloops boasts hiking trails, bike parks, and ski areas.

According to the City of Kamloops:

“The word Kamloops is the English translation of the Shuswap word Tk’emlúps, which means ‘where the rivers meet’, and has been the home of the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc for centuries.”

Vancouver – The Destination Worth Every Mile

Vancouver holds a special place in my heart- after all, I lived there for three years. Whenever I get a chance to revisit the city, I grab it with both hands. This time, it was the final leg of our road journey from Winnipeg to Vancouver.

Driving into the city, we experienced the scenic Coquihalla Highway, which is also known as Highway 5. It is an important transportation route that connects Kamloops and Hope. Coquihalla Highway is known for both breathtaking views and challenging winter driving conditions.

Arriving on the West Coast of Canada always feels like home. With its mix of mountains, beaches, hikes, and urban energy, Vancouver never fails to impress.

The Way Back – Familiar Roads, New Perspectives

We started our return journey to Winnipeg on Wednesday, enjoying the stunning and spectacular views all over again. As a traveller, such beauty never gets old.

This time, we made a stop at Kananaskis, a stunning town in Alberta recently in news for hosting the G7 summit. Even U.S. President Donald Trump praised its natural beauty during his interaction with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, Kananaskis offers spectacular views and year-around outdoor adventures.

Crossing Borders – From Manitoba to BC and Back

Crossing provincial borders was a surreal experience. Each province is distinct in its landscape and culture.

The Prairies – Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and southern Alberta offer endless golden fields, especially along The Trans-Canada Highway.

After Calgary, the scenario shifts dramatically, with towering peaks and lush greenery as Alberta transitions into British Columbia.

The road trip gave me memories for a lifetime – from sunrises over the plains to sunsets behind the mountains.

Reflections: What This Road Trip Taught Me

I had always dreamed of taking a road trip across Canadian provinces ever since I landed in this beautiful country. I had often heard friends talk about the unforgettable memories they made during summer road trips – and now, I finally have my own stories to tell.

Canada, a land of opportunities, truly feels like heaven on Earth, and I was fortunate to witness its beauty firsthand. Many of the cities and towns I explored were once just names I had read in books or newspapers. Seeing them in person, feeling their local charm, and experiencing the warmth of their people made the journey deeply personal.

The memories, the landscapes and the quiet moments along the way will forever remain close to my heart. With a renewed sense of adventure and gratitude, I now look forward to my next dream: a road trip from Winnipeg to Toronto and Montreal.

Until then, signing off—with my heart still somewhere on those open Canadian roads.
